Don't Convert PDF
To select different paper stock and finishing options for different subsets in a print job, PDF files are usually converted to Postscript, and appropriate "setpagedevice" commands are inserted in it. Because PostScript provides no direct support for some elements that PDF supports, transparency must be flattened, fonts may be converted to outlines, and device-independent colors are converted to device-dependent colors, spot colors are converted to process, and so on. Often, a PDF file's contents are converted multiple times to accommodate various limitations in the existing workflow solutions. With SmartPDFPrintware™, Adobe PDF files remains unconverted and device independent: Transparent artwork is rendered live by RIP systems, and ICC-based color management ensures color accuracy and consistency.

Print Non-stop on Mixed Paper Sizes
Many users appended together large number of PDF files, each of which may be composed with different PDF Page Sizes. This combined PDF document may contain 8.5” x 11” letter size pages, followed by 11” x 17” tabloid size pages, followed by 8.5” x 11” letter size pages, followed by 8.5” x 14” legal size pages, followed by 11” x 17” size pages, in no particular order with unpredictable frequency. In such say 5000 page document there may be many, many transitions from one page size to next.

Using existing workflow solutions, print service provider is required to manually determine position of each non-standard size page – the exception page. PSP then uses it to manually mark position of each non-standard size page and associate it with appropriate paper stock. This manual process is time consuming and frightfully error prone.

SmartPDFPrintware™ does this automatically. It determines size of all the PDF pages in a job, and creates a user friendly list of different Page Sizes. User uses this list to associate "Normal" page size and "Exception" page sizes to appropriate paper stocks. SmartPDFPrintware™ uses these associations to dynamically build print instruction job tickets with page override commands which drive digital printing system to print, non-stop, correctly collated mixed page size print jobs - switching from one paper size to next.

Automate Printing in Web-to-Print
Current web-to-print workflow solutions makes on demand print procurement a self service function. However, these solutions automate non-print functions. These solutions lack facilities to produce, automatically, variable documents. If a customer orders more than one item, all the items in a print job must print together in the sequence requested by the buyer. SmartPDFPrintware™ fully automates printing and finishing of online orders using "File Name" method. It allows you to associate printing rules with values of fields in PDF file names. By assigning unique file names, you can control print sequence, media selection, finishing selection, two-sided printing selection, insert slip sheets, tabs, and more. SmartPDFPrintware™ eliminates need to write custom programs to control printing and finishing of web generated orders.

Finished Monthly Statements
Banks, utilities and other institutions perform end-of-month or end-of-quarter processing and produce reports such as customer billing statements. Current trend is to output these as one large either PostScript or PDF file. This file may contain say 20,000 monthly statements, one for each customer. Each statement may contain variable number of pages. There is a need to split these into individual statements i.e. subsets, by say customer account number. There are existing utilities that will split the file based on text on a page. This is the extent of its automation.

SmartPDFPrintware™ capabilities go well beyond splitting. Its "Text-on-Page" method, based on text appearing at a particular location on a page, can split PDF into separate subsets; and for each, select subset normal and exception media, select subset finishing, insert sheets, insert tabs, insert slip sheets between subsets, control number of copies and more.
